Inter Finalizes Djed Spence Transfer, Davide Frattesi Joins Lazio
Inter Milan's summer transfer window has seen significant activity with two key deals nearing completion. Djed Spence is poised to join the club from Tottenham Hotspur, while Davide Frattesi is set to move to Lazio.
Both players have reportedly agreed to personal terms, with only final formalities remaining before official announcements. These moves indicate a strategic reshaping of Inter's squad as the transfer window approaches its final stages.
Frattesi's Loan Move to Lazio
Davide Frattesi's tenure at Inter is drawing to a close with a verbal agreement reached for his transfer to Lazio. The deal is structured as a €1 million loan with a €14 million buy option, which could become mandatory under certain conditions, bringing the total package to approximately €15 million.
Inter will retain a percentage of any future sale, reportedly 50 percent, safeguarding potential future value. This move represents a significant reduction from Inter's previous valuation of the player, which had been €30 million and earlier €40 million.
Despite interest from clubs like Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, and Juventus, none were willing to meet Inter's asking price. Frattesi's departure stems from his position within Cristian Chivu's midfield plans. While he was part of the rotation, the likes of Piotr Zielinski and Petar Sucic were ahead of him in the pecking order, especially with a central midfield trio of Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The arrival of Petar Sucic further pushed Frattesi down the list, making regular playing time at San Siro challenging. Lazio now offers him the opportunity for consistent Serie A football, with the added benefit for Inter of a potential resale clause.
Spence's Arrival and Squad Implications
Frattesi's exit not only frees up squad space but also provides financial flexibility for Inter to pursue other targets. This timing coincides with the impending arrival of Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur. The transfer is agreed upon for a fixed fee of €31.5 million, potentially rising to €34-€35 million with add-ons.
The English international has committed to a five-year contract, running until 2031, and is expected to undergo his medical soon. Inter views Spence as a long-term successor to Denzel Dumfries at right wing-back, with the versatility to also cover Federico Dimarco on the left flank.
Spence's fit within Cristian Chivu's system is a key factor. Chivu's Inter has maintained a 3-5-2 formation but has refined it with quicker vertical transitions and advanced positioning for the wing-backs. This system relies heavily on wide players capable of supporting transitions and linking defense with midfield – a profile that Spence, following his impressive World Cup performance, is expected to fulfill.
Despite struggling for consistent minutes at Tottenham under Roberto De Zerbi, Spence now has a clear path to first-team football in Serie A. These two deals signal a deliberate reshaping of Inter's squad. The departure of Frattesi addresses a midfield surplus, while Spence's arrival strengthens a prioritized position for Chivu.
With Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi, and Yann Bisseck forming the core of the defense, Spence's addition provides depth and versatility on the right. As the transfer window enters its final weeks, these transactions suggest Inter is moving decisively to complete their squad rebuild on their own terms.
