Augsburg Celebrate Finn Dahmen's Heroics After Record-Breaking Bundesliga Performance, Discuss 2026 World Cup Potential
Augsburg secured their Bundesliga status for another season on Saturday, largely thanks to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Finn Dahmen. The 28-year-old was named Man of the Match after making an impressive nine saves in their 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
Dahmen's display also etched his name into Bundesliga history. Bayer Leverkusen's 36 shots in the match represent the most attempts on goal by any Bundesliga team in a game that they ultimately lost. Both FCA head coach Manuel Baum and Dahmen himself reflected on the historic occasion.
Finn Dahmen Reflects on His Goalkeeping Masterclass
“Now that we’ve clinched safety, we don’t have to worry so much and can just enjoy the next few games,” Dahmen shared with German broadcaster DAZN. “I’m obviously happy that today was such a goalkeeper’s game and that I was able to help the team. Once you’ve saved three, four, five shots, you just get this feeling that today is a really good day. It’s fun, of course. But I’d also be happy if we conceded one or two fewer chances in the coming weeks.”
Augsburg Express Admiration for Their Goalkeeper
“We could have defended better,” head coach Manuel Baum admitted at the post-match press conference. “But he played a huge role in this. I think if you put together a highlight reel of Finn today, it would last over ten minutes. The performances he puts in week after week render him fully deserving of a spot on the World Cup squad. I’d be thrilled if Finn can move onto the tournament after this season. He proves week after week that he fully deserves it.
“Finn is clearly a German national team goalkeeper,” added Dahmen’s Augsburg teammate Cedric Zesiger in the mixed zone. “That’s my opinion.”
Will Dahmen Feature at the World Cup?
Dahmen, known for his crucial saves and record-chasing performances last season, was included in Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann's squad for the recent March international break. However, the 28-year-old is still awaiting his senior international debut, as Nagelsmann opted for Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel in the two friendly matches.
Neither Baumann nor Nübel particularly impressed, leading some German press outlets to speculate that Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer might make a surprising return to start in goal for Germany at the World Cup, despite having repeatedly ruled out a return to the national team. Baumann and Nübel collectively have only 14 international caps.
Nagelsmann initially selected four goalkeepers for his Euro 2024 squad, but Nübel was ultimately cut. Noah Atubolu (Freiburg) and Jonas Urbig (Bayern) have also received call-ups under Nagelsmann without earning their first cap. It is plausible that Nagelsmann might again nominate four goalkeepers, given the current situation.
Dahmen might get an opportunity in one of the pre-tournament friendlies, but it's more likely that Nagelsmann will prioritize giving Baumann as much experience as possible. It is also worth noting that the Wiesbaden-native's recent form has not been as consistently outstanding as his club performances might suggest.
Dahmen conceded five goals against Stuttgart three weeks ago and also had a shaky performance in the previous week's 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim. Dahmen, whose mother is English, is also eligible to represent England internationally.
Dahmen remains a considerable way down the pecking order for the German national team. While his brilliant performance against Leverkusen is commendable, the likelihood of Dahmen earning his first international cap in the near future appears remote.
Augsburg's "Fuggerstädter" still have much to celebrate with their consistent No. 1, especially on a day that secured their 16th consecutive season in the Bundesliga. The Bavarian Swabians have yet to be relegated from the German top flight.
