Igor Matanovic Reflects on Bittersweet Victory Against Former Club St. Pauli
Freiburg forward Igor Matanovic found himself in a peculiar position on Sunday evening, as his two goals secured a crucial 2-1 Bundesliga away victory against his beloved former club, St. Pauli. The Hamburg native, who declined to celebrate either strike, expressed mixed feelings, particularly as St. Pauli is currently embroiled in a tense relegation battle.
A Journey with the Kiezkicker
Matanovic's deep connection to St. Pauli dates back to 2010 when he joined their youth academy at just seven years old. Like many promising German football talents, he experienced match days from a young age, even serving as a ball boy in the stadium. His hard work paid off, leading to his first-team debut during the 2020/21 2. Bundesliga season.
Frankfurt's Investment and Development
His talent didn't go unnoticed. Eintracht Frankfurt secured his services in the summer of 2021 with a €1.8 million transfer. To aid his development, Frankfurt immediately loaned him back to the Hamburg outfit for an extended two-year period. Despite this opportunity, Matanovic managed only three goals for St. Pauli across those two seasons.
Breakthrough and Growing Value
Matanovic truly began to hit his stride during a loan spell with Karlsruher SC in the 2023/24 2. Bundesliga campaign. Although he only netted two goals in 25 appearances across all competitions for Frankfurt in the subsequent 2024/25 season, Eintracht's belief in his potential remains strong, evidenced by a buyback clause included in his sale to Freiburg. His recent surge in scoring form, continuing from the beginning of the year, suggests this clause might soon be activated. Over the past three months, Matanovic's estimated market value has significantly risen by €3 million, now reaching €10 million.
Matanovic's Emotional Return
"It was a very special game for me," Matanovic shared after the match. "I cherished my 13 years here. I was a young boy in these stands, a ball boy. Being able to play here today was fantastic. The warm reception from the fans when I walked out before the game meant a lot to me, and I truly appreciate it."
He continued, highlighting his professional commitment: "However, today I wear the Freiburg crest, and I must give my absolute best for this club. That's what I did. As a team, we achieved a great deal. We aimed to build on our momentum from Thursday, though we didn't fully manage it. My first goal also had a significant element of luck; I was fortunate with how the ball bounced."
Coach Julian Schuster's Praise
Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster lauded the 22-year-old's progress: "The lad chose to come to us from Eintracht. It took some time for him to fully grasp our demands and meet our expectations, but he's doing so perfectly now. His work against the ball has made tremendous strides over the last six months."
Schuster further emphasized Matanovic's attacking prowess: "His quality in tight spaces with the ball and his ability to maintain possession are remarkable. And let's not overlook the threat he poses in front of goal. His instinct for scoring is immensely helpful to us, and it's clearly translating into goals now."
Schuster's Empathy for St. Pauli
While pleased with the victory, Schuster also conveyed his sympathy for St. Pauli's situation. "We're delighted to have won against a team that has consistently delivered strong performances recently," he stated. "They possess real quality, and we were fortunate to come back against them."
Expressing his admiration for the club, Schuster added, "I've said this before and will say it again: I hope to have the privilege of playing an away match here next year. I simply find this stadium, this club, these fans, and this team wonderful and remarkable."
Concluding with a message of encouragement, Schuster said, "I am convinced that St. Pauli can avoid relegation. Alex [presumably referring to the St. Pauli coach], I wish you and your team immense strength and energy. I hope that, together, you can achieve your goal and be a part of the Bundesliga next year."
