Nico Schlotterbeck's Borussia Dortmund Future: Three Options Revealed by Lars Ricken
Nico Schlotterbeck's future at Borussia Dortmund remains uncertain despite ongoing contract discussions. The German defender is currently under contract until 2027, but negotiations appear to have reached an impasse, particularly following Sebastian Kehl's departure from his role as sporting director.
Borussia Dortmund's managing director, Lars Ricken, clarified the situation in an interview with Sport Bild, stating, "There are three available options: we extend his current deal, we sell him this summer, or we allow him to enter the final year of his contract."
Ricken further emphasized a strong desire to avoid the latter scenario: "We all want to prevent the last option. That would not be beneficial for either us or Nico."
Despite the summer transfer window approaching, Ricken is hesitant to impose a deadline for a decision. He explained, "While setting deadlines can be useful in some cases, it's not appropriate here. Our discussions are conducted respectfully and confidentially, and we aim to avoid adding unnecessary pressure." He also questioned, "Why should we limit ourselves when we are still well within the timeframe we initially agreed upon?"
Furthermore, Ricken dismissed any direct correlation between Kehl's departure and the prolonged nature of the negotiations. He asserted, "Such decisions must be driven by conviction, not by tactical considerations. Both Sebastian and BVB were in full agreement on this." He added, "I was personally involved in the majority of these discussions. Moreover, it's clear that a player always signs a contract with the club as an institution, not with a single individual."
