Monza defeated Cagliari 4-0 in a Serie A match on October 19. Gustavo Varela scored two goals and contributed to another at the Stadio Brianteo. This victory marks Monza's second league win of the season after seven rounds.

Eddy Kouadio gave the home team the lead before halftime. Monza extended their advantage in the second half, leaving Cagliari unable to respond.

Varela Hits Six League Goals

Kouadio found the net in the 39th minute, assisted by Dany Mota. It was the only goal of the first half.

Two minutes after the break, Monza doubled their lead. Varela scored in the 47th minute from an assist by Ondoa. He then set up Jay Robinson for the third goal in the 66th minute.

Varela completed his brace in the 79th minute. He received a match rating of 9.71, the highest on the field, followed by Kouadio (8.61) and Robinson (8.2). These two goals bring Varela's league tally to six, matching Malen and trailing league leader Raimondo by one.

Törnqvist Makes Five Saves as Cagliari Misses Chances

The final scoreline doesn't fully reflect the game's flow. Cagliari held 55% possession, completed 431 passes compared to Monza's 347, and earned seven corners to Monza's two.

Cagliari also had more shots, 16 to 14. Their expected goals (xG) of 2.11 were nearly identical to Monza's 2.1. The decisive factor was finishing: Törnqvist made five saves, while Caprile made two, and Monza converted four of their six shots on target.

The match became heated towards the end. Harry Winks received a yellow card for a foul in the 76th minute. Birindelli and Fadera were also booked in the 82nd minute for arguing.

Cagliari's Four-Match Unbeaten Streak Ends

Cagliari entered the match on a four-game unbeaten run, including a 1-1 draw with Juventus and three previous wins. They currently sit seventh in the league with 13 points, tied with Frosinone, and have a goal difference of -1.

Monza occupies 14th place with 7 points. They had lost 3-1 to Lazio in their previous game, with only one win in the five matches prior to Monday's fixture.

This result also broke Cagliari's positive streak against Monza. Cagliari had won their last two encounters, 2-1 in Monza in January 2025 and 3-0 at home in March 2025. This was Monza's first victory over them since a 1-0 win at home on March 16, 2024.

Monza is scheduled to play Torino on Friday, October 23. Cagliari will host Bologna on Saturday, October 24.
